What is FooCORE?

FooCORE is a highly modified MOO core database originally derived from LambdaCore. It contains many added features, a good bit of improved functionality, more of a 'base' to start a MOO from. It's also our goal to create programs that work in such a way that they can be easily modified by programers who are creating a new moo. With luck you'll spend less time coding and more time working on make your MOO something that people want to play. It was created by the wizards of the Foo.
(Boy this looks a lot like the Welcome page... —EDT)

Just what is a MOO?

Multi-user Object Oriented interfaces allow communication between any number of people from anywhere in the world. The interface also gives users a programmable environment in which a large of array of different customizations can be programmed. A MOO is an efficient solution for anyone wishing to communicate with others, or embark on a creating a fantasy game.

What do I need to know to be able to run my own moo?

More then you do now, we guarantee it. Running a moo is a learning experience no matter if you've run 100’s before or this is your first try at creating something. Be prepared to learn something new everyday, sometimes from the most unexpected sources. Listen to your other wizards, your programmers, and most importantly your players they will all help you make your moo something special.

That was all very nice and high minded... now WHAT do I need to know to be able to run my own moo?

Before you start your own moo it would be a good idea to have at least a basic understanding of how a moo works and how to program it to do what you want it to. Point your MOO client of choice over to foomoo.org port 4500 to play around a bit.

To run the FooCORE db you need to be running some flavor of UNIX on your server and have some working knowledge of UNIX as well . The code extensions do not work with WinMOO so you will not be able to run a FooCORE based MOO from a windows computer. If you need a version of UNIX to run on some old computer you have lying around try www.netbsd.org they have versions that run on everything from P4's to toasters.

Great, wise guy, I have Windows so I'm screwed, thanks.

Not so fast. Rather then hosting the moo from your own computer you can run it on one of many servers that host MOO's, MUDs and other such things. Yes, they do cost some money but not too much. You can find a listing of some hosts here: (At this time I can't think of any nice good hosts out there, if you have any recomendations please email me at nell at papervoices dot com - EDT)

Another option is to beg some friend with a UNIX box and fast connection to let you run it from there.

Credit due

Parts of the moo's help files and documents are from other sources in a rather haphazard collection from learning and working at creating a few moos. As much as I would like to cite each and every place the information comes from it would be almost imposable. However there are a few sources I do remember reading these are Newbie Wizards FAQ, JCore help files, and Javlen's Guide for PennMUSH Gods

Who can I thank for all this wonderful stuff?

You can thanks the people of FooCORE dive (master wizard and BSD foo), Matrix (coding foo), Ashen (another coding foo), Nell (documenting foo), Cheyan (dive control)

Who the F*** made this piece of S***?

Ezran, it's all Ezran's fault.
